If you just purchased a new farm and are going to plant crops, you will need a variety of planting equipment. This will make it much easier for you to get the job done quicker. If this is the first time you have owned a farm, you may not know what you need. To help you, below are three types of planting equipment to get you started.

Small Backhoe

If you have a tractor that can handle a small backhoe, then you need to purchase one. These backhoes are referred to as front end loaders. They can be very useful for many things, such as digging small holes, moving large items, and to do land grading.

If you do not have good soil where you want to plant, you will need to bring in healthy soil. Along with the soil you also need compost, which is manure, to help keep the plants healthy. A small backhoe clan help you move the soil and manure to where you need it to go much quicker than doing it on your own using something like a truck.

Cultipacker

A cultipacker can help you get your seedbeds ready for planting. They do this by firming and evening out the soil. This can be very useful if you had to bring in more soil as the soil will likely not be very event. You can purchase an attachment for the cultipacker that will push the seeds into the soil at the proper depth.

You can find cultipackers in a variety of sizes. Because you have a small farm a small cultipacker should work fine for you.

Soil Cultivator

One thing you will have to deal with is pesky weeds in your crop beds. Weeds can quickly take over if not dealt with. If this happens, your crops could die because weeds will take moisture and other nutrients away from your plants.

To help control weeds you should purchase a soil cultivator. This is attached to the back of a tractor.  This equipment has small tines that are spaced so that they remove weeds, along with the weeds' roots, as you drive the tractor over the soil. Removing the roots is important as if not removed the weeds will grow back quickly.

If you already have vegetables planted, you can move the tines and space them, so they will not hit the plants but only the weeds.

Talk with a farm equipment company about other things you will need to plant your crops.

About Me
Gardening Basics: Choosing the Best Fertilizer

If you walk into a home and garden shop asking for a bag of fertilizer, be prepared to answer a couple of questions. That's because not all types of fertilizers are equal. I learned that lesson the very first year I planted my backyard garden. My goal was to grow vegetables, so I didn't need fertilizers that were intended to help flowers grow. I did need a product that would add certain nutrients to the soil that were not currently present. Fortunately, the owner of the local feed shop asked me a few questions and was able to direct me to a product that was right for my needs. Before you begin plowing up land for planting, let me tell you more about choosing the right fertilizer. Follow the advice and get ready to harvest enough vegetables to feed your family and still give some away to friends.
